In their natural environments, chinchillas take baths in volcanic ash. For your pet chinchilla, you may set up dust baths using special sand that has superior absorption capabilities. This delicate sand is very similar to the volcanic dust in which chinchillas bathe in nature, making it perfect for your chinchilla to maintain proper hygiene. The fine particles of this soft sand, which is gentle on both skin and wool, clean every hair on your chinchilla's coat. Besides, it absorbs and removes any moisture, grease, and contaminants.
Chinchillas should take sand baths regularly, at least three times a week. They are quite active bathers, floundering, flopping, and rolling all over the place, making bathing a pretty messy business, so we also recommend getting a covered bath house. Put a 1-3 cm layer of sand in your bath house.
It is recommended sifting the sand after each bath to remove any contaminations, and adding some fresh sand. It is also advisable to replace the sand completely every three to four baths.
